Book Review: 3 Books in 3 Weeks

Recently I wrote about my delight in achieving the six goals I had set for myself from June 15-July 15.  One of those goals was to read a portion of a book each morning after reading my Bible and writing in my journal.  I suffer from an addiction to books though, so once I began reading, I often found it difficult not to pick up my books again later in the day whenever I had a few minutes.  Before I knew it, I had finished 3 books in 3 weeks!  Here are the three books I read, and a brief review of each.

1. Sacred Marriage: What If God Designed Marriage to Make Us Holy More Than to Make Us Happy by Gary Thomas.  I have to say, I loved this book.  It will be the new book that I give to all of my married friends.  We actually read this book for our weekly Bible Study, but I would recommend it in any format.  I like how this book does not give tips for improving your marriage as much as it focuses on how your marriage can help you to deepen your relationship with God.

2. The Key To Your Child’s Heart: Proven Steps That Will Help You Raise Motivated, Obedient, and Loving Children
by Gary Smalley
:  I really enjoyed this book, and I think that was largely because I was in a good place to listen to his advice.  I tend to have many more conflicts with one of our children than the other, and I have struggled to resolve those conflicts in a healthy way.  Using mostly anecdotal evidence from his own family and years of counseling other families, Smalley gives practical advice for solving common dilemmas in parenting.  I began applying his words of wisdom immediately, and quickly began to see improvements as I changed my behaviors and attitude.

3. The Simple Dollar: How One Man Wiped Out His Debts and Achieved the Life of His Dreams
by Trent Hamm
.  I have wanted to read this book for some time as a fan of Hamm’s popular website.  This book is very similar to The Money Saving Mom’s Budgetby Crystal Paine, The Shrewd Christian: You Can’t Have It All, But You Can Have More Than Enoughby Neil Atkinson, The Total Money Makeover: A Proven Plan for Financial Fitnessby Dave Ramsey, and many of my other favorite financial authors.  However, don’t let that convince you not to read it!  It’s jam-packed with lots of great ideas, personal stories, and action steps for getting out of debt and achieving your life’s goals.  It is not only well-written, but concise, and I finished it in 3 days.  It was also the first e-book I have ever read cover to cover on my laptop screen.  (I got it FREE through Money Saving Mom.)  There’s a first time for everything!

What books have you been reading recently and what did you think of them?
